A hotel manager is responsible for the day-to-day management of a hotel and its staff. They have commercial accountability for budgeting and financial management, planning, organising and directing all hotel services, including front-of-house (reception, concierge, and reservations), food and beverage operations and housekeeping. In larger hotels, managers often have a specific remit (guest services, accounting, and marketing) and make up a general management team. While taking a strategic overview and planning ahead to maximize profits, the manager must also pay attention to the details, setting the example for staff to deliver a standard of service and presentation that meets guests’ needs and expectations. Business and people management are equally important elements.

The job of an Hotel manager is more compelling and tiresome as in case of a Five Star hotels where there are large number of employees under his wings as compared to a small hotel, and above that he has to co-ordinate the entire operation of the Hotel and handle the staff, and oversee their behavior, these becomes more complicated during the season period, when tourist folk in, as well as the number of people who are staying also increase, during this period the  Hotel manager has the additional responsibility of recruiting more staff!

One can pursue a Career in Hotel management through various courses, earlier a Hotel Managers position was conferred through the hierarchical promotions, that is the traditional model, though today one can study Hotel Management and the various diverse faculties that HM provides. There are various national as well as international colleges that provide Hotel Management course, prominent being IHM (Indian school of Hotel Management).
