Magazines have been in Print since long, precisely since 1731, when Edward Cave an English Printer and Editor began the Gentleman’s Magazine in England, since then periodicals or magazines have grown on to become part of the urban and rural life cycle. Particularly since the Industrial Revolution, and since this period saw the rise in the earning of the working class Europeans particularly, those in England, France, Germany. Magazines vary, on the very basis of their target audience, there are magazines that cover the General News or current Affairs, there are magazines which cover only entertainment, and there are magazines that are devoted only on interest’s like Animal Husbandry or Cycling or Shoes etc. for that there are satirical magazines as well! thus targeting a niche market rather than a clout. Primary source of income for a magazine, just like any other publications, is revenue earned through Advertising. There are a number of department in a magazine and these vary from a company to company, though there are quite few common departments that are mostly found:

Art Department.

Content/Editorial Department.

Media Selling Department.

Marketing Department.

Creative Department.

Customer Care/Queries.

Art Department: This is the department that usually provides Art and Visual appeal in a magazine, these include Design, Art, Photography, DTP etc. The Art department has the responsibility of infusing the predetermined theme of the particular issue through their Artwork, Design and copy. Usually the employees in the department are Photographers, Graphics and Layout Designer, DTP operators etc. whilst they are to have a good knowledge of the specific field they want to work in.

Content/Editorial Department: Editorial Department in a magazine is that department that fills the void in a magazine through their editorials and articles. There is always a featured article that is the core content of the magazines issue and it is surrounded by other content and articles.

Media Selling Department: This department caters to sell all Advertising Space in the Magazine; it is one department where all kinds of negotiation take place, where convincing the seller and rebuffing the buyer is a norm.

Creative Department: Creative department takes care of the creative works of magazines, including illustration and cover design etc.
